Improved tests for networks. Compiles.

PLEASE TEST ON AS MANY PLATFORMS AS POSSIBLE!
I can only test it on Linux, have no dialup running on Solaris, know nothing
about other Unixes. If there's a problem: mailto:karsten@phy.hw.ac.uk
