Mike Welles a7f6e194cf * modified Makefile.in, configure, and dist/newversion, so that. ... the old code updates things based on the info in VERSION. I've kept this, but added a second token in VERSION, "beta". configure will now parse VERSION into $VERSION and $RELEASE.
